What is IRPL?

Intense Regulated Pulsed Light (IRPL) Is an innovative way to treat eye conditions like dry eye, ocular rosacea and meibomian gland dysfunction.

IRPL works by reducing inflammation and improving the lipid layer of your tears, restoring stability to the tear film. This is essential for preventing tear evaporation and keeping your eyes hydrated. MGD occurs when Meibomian glands are blocked or inflamed, decreasing the oil in the tear film. IRPL opens these glands and liquefies thickened oils, reducing inflammation and enhancing tear quality for clearer vision and long-lasting comfort.

Unlike temporary treatments like eye drops, IPL directly addresses the root cause of dry eye, providing lasting improvements in tear production and gland function. We combine IPL with manual gland expression to optimise results, ensuring healthy tear production and long-term relief from dry eye symptoms.

Tear Stim IRPL FAQs

1. Can I get IRPL on the NHS?

Unfortunately not! Currently the NHS do not fund any procedures for managing dry eye in a primary care setting.

2. How often will I need the treatment repeating?

With IRPL, initially 3 loading doses are required, spaced 2 weeks apart. After the 3 initial treatments, some patients may need a top up after 6-12 months, but many will feel lasting effects for years to come.

3. Is it painful?

Not at all.  No pain should be felt during the procedure at all.

4. How much does it cost?/

We charge £200 for one IRPL treatment. We offer a package of 4 sessions for £700 to start patients off.

5. Will it cure my dry eye?

Unfortunately not. Dry eye is a chronic condition, and while IRPL can greatly reduce the impact of rosacea, continuous management from the patient in the form of drops, hot compresses and lid hygiene is often needed.
